Capella University Honors More Than 900 Graduates at March 5 Commencement in Atlanta

March 4, 2005

MINNEAPOLIS, March 4, 2005 – Capella University, an accredited online university headquartered in Minneapolis, will confer more than 900 graduate and undergraduate degrees at a commencement ceremony in Atlanta, Georgia. The event will be held on Saturday, March 5, at 4:00 p.m., at Atlanta Symphony Hall and features respected researcher and national columnist Dr. Lisa Williams, who will serve as the keynote speaker.

"For Capella University, this year's commencement is significant in two key regards," said Michael J. Offerman, president, Capella University. "First, it's the first time that we'll be holding commencement in Atlanta. Secondly, it's also the first year that our student base has grown large enough that we'll need to hold not just one but two commencement ceremonies. To accommodate graduates from our base of more than 12,000 learners worldwide, we'll recognize the accomplishments of our graduates this month in Atlanta, and again in a summer ceremony to be held in July at The Majestic Theater in Dallas, Texas."

The commencement ceremony in Atlanta represents the final highlight to a week of educational courses and learning opportunities for Capella University students. Approximately 1,000 current Capella University graduate-level learners are also in Atlanta attending a residential colloquium held the week before commencement. Comprised of academic seminars led by Capella University faculty and other scholars, the colloquium offers attendees the chance to gather, meet and learn together in person — often for the first time, since Capella's courses are entirely online.

Keynote speaker Williams is a respected researcher, national columnist and award-winning speaker. As president and CEO of Williams Research Inc., she is the author of the recently published book "Leading Beyond Excellence." A former professor at Penn State University and a two-time endowed chair holder, she has dedicated her life to educating and developing excellence in future and current leaders. She is the first female to hold a multimillion dollar endowed chair in her field, the first African American female to graduate from the Ohio State University's Marketing and Logistics Department, and the second woman in her discipline to become a full professor.

Approximately 165 Capella graduates plan to participate in the Atlanta commencement ceremony. For those who cannot attend the commencement in person, Capella University is broadcasting the event live via webcast.
