Higher Education is Entering New Age of Accountability, says Capella University’s Dr. Gould

April 20, 2006

SAN DIEGO, April 20, 2006 — Dramatic increases in college prices plus heightened interest in educational outcomes spurred by the No Child Left Behind era are fueling added scrutiny from Congress and subsequent pressure for higher education to demonstrate return on investment, Edward Gould, Ed.D., told attendees of the annual meeting of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers.

“Institutions of higher learning are entering a new age of accountability and disclosure,” said Dr. Gould, faculty director for higher education and corporate programs at Capella University, an accredited* online university. “Each institution must establish desired educational outcomes, then measure learners against those outcomes. The institution's educational mission, learner expectations and learner results need to align.” He added that educational outcomes results also provide universities and colleges with valuable data from which to make continuous improvements.

The rising cost of higher education is outpacing funding from tuition, grants, endowments and other sources. By 2015, higher education is expected to result in a net loss of $38 billion, said Gould.

Dr. Gould is a noted speaker on the trends and challenges of higher education and higher education leadership. His extensive experience includes leadership positions in online learning institutions and with California's network of 108 community colleges.
