CAPELLA UNIVERSITY DEAN AUTHORS NEW BOOKS ON PUBLIC HEALTH LEADERSHIP

October 12, 2006

MINNEAPOLIS, Oct. 12, 2006 – Public health professionals today must have the capability to quickly and effectively deal with challenges and crisis that were not on the radar just a few years ago. A pair of new books by Dr. Chris Cassirer, ScD, MPH, dean of the School of Human Services at Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited online university and a leader in online education, focus on the fundamental changes that lie ahead for the public health profession.

The first book is titled Fundamentals of Public Health Management and Leadership. The second book is a companion set of case studies that will give graduate students the opportunity to apply what they have learned.

“The scope of public health as a profession has expanded dramatically over the past several decades,” Dr. Cassirer says. “These books explore the skills required to communicate, to relate, and to deal with emerging crisis in the area of public health. Today, and even more so in the near future, public health professionals will need to have a global perspective. We need to develop a new set of competencies that looks quite different from the past.”

The books, which will be published by Jones and Bartlett and will be available in the fall of 2008, are part of a 10-book series titled Essential Public Health, which captures the full range of issues that affect the public’s health, from the impact of AIDS to the cost of healthcare. Edited by Richard Riegelman, the series will be closely tied to new public health core competencies, and will serve as the basis for the certifying examination by the National Board of Public Health Examiners.

The books will also address the core competencies that the Council on Education for Public Health (CEPH) expects programs to offer.
