Capella University Offers New Management Education and IT Education

February 27, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS, February 27, 2007 – Between 2004 and 2014, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that more than half a million college and university faculty positions will need to be filled due to faculty retirements and growth in the number of college-age students. The need will be most acute in popular, fast-growing fields of study, including business and information technology (IT). In response, Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited,* fully online university based in
Minneapolis, Minn., has created two new PhD specializations designed to prepare people for post-secondary faculty positions in business and IT.  The specializations, both offered through Capella’s School of Business and Technology, are a PhD in organization and management, management education specialization, and a PhD in IT, IT education specialization.

The focus of the management education specialization is on preparing business professionals to teach business and management-related courses at the post-secondary level. The specialization combines advanced organization and management knowledge and skills with management education literature analysis, teaching practice, learning and instructional design, learning theory and educational processes, classroom assessment, and course design and development.

The IT education specialization is intended for IT educators who have a master’s degree in computer science or a related field and want to pursue IT faculty positions in higher education settings, and for IT subject matter experts with master’s degrees who want to pursue educational careers. Capella is one of the few universities to offer an IT education specialization.

“These two new specializations are a natural for us,” said Barbara Butts Williams, PhD, associate dean of Capella’s

School of
Business and Technology. “There is a growing need for post-secondary faculty in the management and IT fields, both areas in which the School of Business and Technology has existing strengths. The programs also leverage the expertise of Capella’s

School of
Education in preparing people to be educators. Because the programs are online, I think they will have additional appeal to busy management and IT professionals, as well as post-secondary faculty who wish to teach in a higher education setting.”

Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for its PhD specializations in management education and IT education. For more information, please call 1-888-CAPELLA
