Capella University Launches Online PhD Specializations in Project Management and Information Security

August 3, 2007

MINNEAPOLIS, August 3, 2007 – Capella University (www.capella.edu), an accredited,* online university based in Minneapolis, announced that it has added Project Management specializations to both its PhD in Organization and Management (OM), and its PhD in Information Technology (IT) online degree programs. The online university also announced a new Information Security specialization within its PhD in Information Technology program. The new specializations are designed to meet the growing need for expertise in project management and information security, both of which were identified among the top five “hottest skills” sought by IT executives in a survey conducted by Computerworld.

According to the Project Management Institute (PMI), which maintains a database of project management degree programs, there are only 12 doctoral programs in project management worldwide.  PMI published the data in its December 2006 supplement to PMI Today. In contrast, PMI’s database includes 261 master’s degree programs in project management worldwide.

“Since the mid-90s, the number of project management degree programs has grown exponentially — from 11 programs in 1994 to 284 in 2006, according to PMI. But the number of PhD specializations has not kept pace,” said Kurt Linberg, PhD, dean of Capella’s School of Business and Technology. “As the strategic importance of project management continues to grow, we believe it is critical to expand opportunities for project management professionals to contribute knowledge to the field through doctoral level research. Our two new PhD-level specializations in Project Management are designed to help fill that need.” Capella now offers six Project Management specializations, allowing students at the bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD levels to choose either a business or IT project management focus.

Capella also offers a career ladder in the growing field of information security, including a doctoral degree in IT, Information Security specialization; a master’s degree in IT, Information Security specialization; and a bachelor’s degree in IT, Information Assurance and Security specialization. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, data and system security have become critical concerns in nearly every industry and government sector, which has created a demand for high-level information security expertise.

Capella recently has been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. According to the CAEIAE Web site, an educational institution that applies for and receives the designation “must pass a rigorous review demonstrating its commitment to academic excellence in information assurance education.”

Capella is now accepting enrollment applications for these new specializations. For more information, please call 1-888-CAPELLA (227-3552), option 3, or e-mail info@capella.edu.

Review of the PhD in IT, Information Security and Project Management specializations is pending in AL, AZ, FL, GA, KY, SC, and WA. Review of the PhD in OM, Project Management specialization is pending in AL, AR, AZ, FL, GA, KY, SC, and WA.
