MINNEAPOLIS, April 24, 2006 — Dr. Robert Hockin, an adjunct faculty member with Capella University's School of Business and Technology, has been named to the Board of Examiners for the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. Hockin has served as an examiner for the award several times during the previous decade.

“This has been a long-standing interest of mine. When the Baldrige Award first became known to me, I thought this is something fascinating and unique,” Hockin said. “It was the first-ever national recognition for companies that are doing outstanding work. When I looked at the process itself, I felt it was also the single best organizational assessment tool I had ever seen or used.”

The Baldrige Award is given by the president of the United States to manufacturing, service, small business, education, and health care organizations that are judged to be outstanding in seven areas: leadership; strategic planning; customer and market focus; measurement, analysis, and knowledge management; human resource focus; process management; and results. This year is also a pilot year for nonprofits and government agencies as a new Baldrige Award category. Malcolm Baldrige was secretary of commerce from 1981 until his death in 1987, and was a proponent of quality initiatives.

Hockin has been an adjunct faculty member in Capella University's School of Business and Technology since 1994. Capella is an accredited online university that serves more than 14,500 students and is a pioneer in online education.

“I enjoy the teaching. It is very personally rewarding,” said Hockin, who also serves as a senior consulting executive in the Health Services group at BearingPoint. “Professionally, teaching also helps to keep me at the front of the game. In other words, thought leadership that is critical to my profession as a consultant requires that I need to stay current with all the new ideas and thoughts in the field. Teaching helps me do that.”
