MINNEAPOLIS, April 4, 2005 – Capella University, an online accredited university headquartered in Minneapolis, today announced a partnership with the University of California-Irvine Extension to offer Capella University students a new master's degree specialization in reading and literacy. Graduates of the program will earn a master's degree in education from Capella University, as well as a graduate certificate in reading from UC-Irvine Extension.

Aimed at elementary and secondary teachers, the specialization is designed for K-12 classroom teachers who want to enhance the reading skills of their students, and to impart best practices and key instructional strategies to peers and others involved in reading instruction.

"This partnership is a great example of two institutions taking an innovative approach to helping learners gain access to the high-quality educational opportunities they deserve," said Mike Offerman, president, Capella University. "This program gives K-12 teachers across the country access to a unique degree specialization that is growing increasingly important and in-demand in today's educational environment.

"The new specialization prepares successful graduates for opportunities to serve as highly qualified lead teachers and resident experts in reading diagnosis and programming," said Gary Matkin, dean of Continuing Education, UC-Irvine. "Such expertise is increasingly important in public education today as the number of students with limited English proficiency increases dramatically."

UC-Irvine's reading certificate is state-approved in California and is aligned with nationally recognized teaching standards. The online courses will be developed collaboratively by Capella University and UC-Irvine Extension and will be taught by UC-Irvine Extension instructors who have been trained in the use of Capella University's online delivery systems.

The new reading and literacy specialization is scheduled to be introduced through Capella University in summer 2005. Information is now available for interested students at www.capella.edu/education.
