Minneapolis, MN, November 9, 2005 – It is no surprise that when Carol Young, a 58-year-old neonatal nurse, decided to “get off the couch” and become more active four years ago, she chose to take up marathon running.

As someone who craves discipline and dedication, Young purposefully sets her sights high. So it made perfect sense when only a few months after she finished her first marathon, she began pursuing an online degree at Capella University. The combination of rigorous academic standards and flexibility at Capella appeals to many distance runners like Young. Four years after starting her online education, Young recently finished her PhD with a specialization in organization and management. Her dissertation analyzes the relationship between physical activity and job stress among neonatal nurses. She also happens to be training for the Harrisdirect Seattle Marathon 2005 on Nov. 27 – her 11th since enrolling at Capella.

Capella University, an accredited online university headquartered in Minneapolis, is once again proud to sponsor runners like Young in the Harrisdirect Seattle Marathon 2005. Many runners find pursuing an online degree to be the perfect fit for their active lifestyles, and Carol Young is no exception.

“They are equally challenging, an online education at Capella and running a marathon. They both take a lot of determination. My first marathon, when I crossed the finish line, it was such a high. Receiving my diploma from Capella … it is the same feeling.” Young says.

Michael J. Offerman, president and CEO of Capella University, also sees many similarities between distance runners and the students in Capella’s bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs.

“It takes determination and persistence to finish a marathon and to earn an advanced degree. Just as every runner has a story of challenge and courage — so does every Capella graduate,” he says.
