Minneapolis, March 29, 2006 — Youth Farm Inc., a residential treatment program for boys ages 12 to 21 with family, school, community and emotional problems, has named Dr. Jim Phillips as its new executive director. Established in 1960, Youth Farm is located on the outskirts of Peoria, Ill., and serves young men from all over the state. Currently, Youth Farm provides treatment for up to approximately 50 boys. Dr. Phillips earned a doctorate from Capella University's human services online degree program in 2005. Capella is an accredited online university that has helped pioneer online education.

Prior to being named executive director, Dr. Phillips served on Youth Farm's board of directors and provided mental health insight to the operation of the nonprofit organization.

“The PhD program at Capella was instrumental in providing me with the resources and the research tools I needed, and it met the desire of Youth Farm's board of directors for us to become a cutting-edge agency,” Dr. Phillips said. “They wanted the PhD credentials to open doors and to provide credibility to our programs and the quality of services we provide our residents. This was particularly important for those agencies who make referrals to us.”

Minneapolis, March 29, 2006 — U.S. Census data show that Latinos are the fastest-growing ethnic group, representing the largest minority in the country. Today, there are approximately 42 million Latinos in the United States, which represents approximately 1 in every 8 residents—by 2008, 1 in every 5 will be Latino. The buying power of Latinos in the United States today stands at more than $800 billion. This will rise to more than $1 trillion by 2008.

Dr. Robert Rodriguez, Chairman of the Board for the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement, will answer questions regarding how businesses can best respond to this demographic shift and the growing economic power of Latinos during a one-hour live Web discussion on the Washington Post Web site on Wednesday, April 19, from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. EST. Part of Washingtonpost.Newsweek Interactive's “Viewpoint” discussion series, visitors can participate by simply logging on to http://discuss.washingtonpost.com/.

Dr. Rodriguez has extensively studied what works and what doesn't work in successfully attracting both Latino employees and customers. He serves as the Faculty Chair for Capella University's School of Business and Technology. Capella is a leading online university that has been a pioneer in online education.

During the interactive session, Dr. Rodriguez will answer questions such as:

  • Why is it important that organizations take notice of the growing Latino community with regards to workforce development?
  • Latinos have lagged behind other minority demographic groups with regards to advanced education—why?
  • Latinos have a purchasing power of almost a trillion dollars, what should employers do to tap into this market?
  • Why don't traditional recruiting methods effectively reach the Latino talent pool?

“With the tremendous growth of the Latino demographic in the Unites States, companies are realizing that Latinos have a lot of purchasing power. So companies want to tap into this market, but they are recognizing that in order to do that they need more Latinos working within their organizations that understand the Latino culture,” Dr. Rodriguez explains. “Latinos tend to be brand conscious and brand loyal, so organizations with a strong employment brand will benefit. Employment branding does not refer to an organization’s products or services, but instead to an organization's reputation as an employer. Those organizations that can effectively recruit, develop and retain Latino talent will be the ones that have a competitive advantage in the marketplace.”

Dr. Rodriguez can be reached at Capella University at Robert.Rodriguez@Capella.edu.

Atlanta, March 20, 2006 — The increasing prominence of the Internet and other forces are creating fundamental changes in every aspect of higher education, Dr. Edward Gould, Ed.D., told attendees of Innovations 2006, the annual conference of the League for Innovation in the Community College. By the year 2015, 12 to 15 percent of all learners will be fully online, he said, and higher education will have witnessed the rise of a new generation of technologically savvy and more diverse faculty and administrators.

“Future community college leaders must navigate their institutions through the chaos resulting from swiftly changing technology, consumerism, economics, legislation and workforce turnover,” said Dr. Gould, faculty director for higher education and corporate programs at Capella University, an accredited* online university that helped pioneer online education. “To succeed, leaders will need to embrace technological savoir-faire, communicate effectively, think “outside of the box” and rapidly espouse change.”

Dr. Gould is a noted speaker on the trends and challenges of higher education and higher education leadership. His extensive experience includes leadership positions in online education institutions and with California's network of 108 community colleges.

Minneapolis, March 17, 2006 — Latinos will make up 20 percent of the U.S. population by the year 2008. To successfully tap into this important talent pool, chief learning officers must help their leaders effectively manage a workforce with an increasingly Latino identity, Dr. Robert Rodriguez told attendees of the spring 2006 Chief Learning Officer symposium at Amelia Island, Florida.

“Employers need to understand the complexity of the Latino demographic,” said Dr. Rodriguez, business school professor at Capella University, an accredited online university that pioneered online education, and board chairman for the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement. “Never assume that what appeals to one segment of the Latino population will work with another.”

Dr. Rodriguez is a frequent public speaker and contributor to human resources industry magazines. He has extensively studied the learning strategies and best practices used by top companies to recruit, manage, develop and retain Latino employees.

In other symposium news, a session led by Capella University's Bill Young, director of education alliances, and representatives from Medtronic, Electronic Data Services and Xcel Energy, tackled one of the biggest challenges today's learning executives face: preparing high-potential employees to assume leadership roles. A key step, said the panelists, is ensuring that the employees, regardless of time, travel and location, are learning and integrating the specific skills necessary for success in their company's environment.

Minneapolis, March 7, 2006 — Dr. Robert Garrett Rodriguez, a PhD graduate of Capella University's School of Human Services, has authored a book that investigates the similarities and differences between expectant mothers and fathers. “What's Your Pregnant Man Thinking?: A Roadmap For Expectant & New Mothers” is a guide for moms and moms-to-be as they navigate the physical and behavioral changes that occur with men before, during and after a pregnancy. Dr. Rodriguez is a 2004 graduate of Capella University , an education leader and accredited online university that pioneered online education.

“What’s Your Pregnant Man Thinking?” offers advice on how couples can make their experience together more endearing and enduring. Specifically, the book offers well-researched methods for bringing couples together, such as developing realistic expectations with your partner during pregnancy and techniques for making communication easier.

The first half of the book analyzes how and why a man's behavior changes, while the second half offers ways to strengthen a relationship during pregnancy and after the birth. Full of practical exercises for couples, the book addresses topics such as what men think about during the nine months of pregnancy; why some men lose themselves in work, old friends, or hobbies when they are needed most; and how couples can make the pregnant relationship a cornerstone of their marriages.

“After studying the behavior of expectant fathers and couples for more than 25 years, I have heard all the dreams, confessions and challenges of expectant fathers during pregnancy,” Dr. Rodriguez says. “In this book, I explain how mutual understanding of these issues can propel couples through this demanding time and into a loving, lasting relationship.”

Dr. Rodriguez's next book, “Grandparents and Grey Hair,” is expected to be published this summer. It describes the physical and behavioral changes that occur in couples when they learn that they will be grandparents.

Dr. Rodriguez is the CEO and Consulting Director for Health Care Business Associates, LLC (http://www.hcba.info/).

Minneapolis, February 27, 2006Capella University PhD graduate and licensed marriage and family therapist and professional counselor Marina Bluvshtein will address psychology professionals at the Minnesota Psychological Association's (MPA) Annual Convention on April 29. During her presentation, “How do you translate wellness?,” Bluvshtein will provide insights into cross-lingualism in therapeutic environments. Bluvshtein is a 2005 graduate of Capella, an education leader and accredited online university that pioneered online education.

The 2006 Annual MSA Conference is titled The Psychology of Wellness: Health Promotion Across Diverse Communities. Bluvshtein will present at 3 p.m., Sat., April 29, at the Minneapolis Marriott Southwest, Minnetonka, Minn.

“Capella's Harold Abel School of Psychology was a consistently stimulating intellectual environment that exposed me to uniquely diverse academic and professional experiences I could not have received anywhere else,” Bluvshtein said. “In fact, some of the ideas for my interactive presentation on therapy across different languages and cultures were developed during my studies at Capella and have enriched the depth and breadth of my private practice.”

Bluvshtein's presentation will discuss the role of language in the therapeutic environment. For example, she will discuss the role and impact of language on therapists practicing in their non-native language while treating native English speakers, and on therapists practicing in their native English language while treating those who use English as their second language.

More than 14,500 learners are enrolled in Capella's undergraduate, master's and PhD online degree programs. A combination of Capella's reputation for academic rigor and its accreditation attracted Bluvshtein to the online university.

Minneapolis, MN, February 20, 2006Capella University core faculty member and licensed psychologist Jeff Leichter, PhD, has initiated an innovative program designed to increase the number of psychologists serving rural populations. Dr. Leichter is a core faculty member in the Harold Abel School of Psychology at Capella, which is an accredited online university that combines distance learning with face-to-face instruction.

Along with several colleagues, Dr. Leichter began developing the concept for a rural psychology training program in 2002 in response to how underserved rural Minnesota is in regards to mental health services, and how difficult it is to recruit and retain psychologists in rural areas of the state. Having recently received grants and gifts totaling nearly $300,000, the Minnesota Consortium for Advanced Rural Psychology Training (MCARPT) program is expected to launch in July of 2006.

“There is nothing like this that we are aware of in the United States,” Dr. Leichter said. “There is this sort of revolving door where psychologists would come to this area, stay a couple years, and then they would leave. We decided one of the ways we could stop this revolving door process would be to develop a training program where people would be specifically trained in how to function in rural communities as psychologists.”

The funds raised for the program will be used to hire recent graduates of doctoral psychology programs who will work for two years at a variety of agencies providing mental health services to residents of west central Minnesota. A total of 11 agencies are part of the consortium, and the trainees will spend time working at each one in an effort to master core competencies necessary to function effectively in rural practice. Once a trainee has completed the program, he or she will be encouraged to accept a full-time position with one of the consortium agencies. Recent or soon-to-be graduated students of doctoral psychology programs are currently being interviewed to participate in the program.
